Megan‘s most recent paper exploring the phase evolution in sputter deposited Hanyes 242 through in situ TEM observations is now available online!

Her work clarifies our hypothesis in her first paper, clearly demonstrating that the equilibrium phase with the HCP-like DOa structure precipitates via continuous ordering much like the metastable phases (e.g. Ni2(Mo,Cr) with FCC-like packing) observed in the conventionally processed alloys.  Such a transition from short range ordered domains into this equilibrium phase have not been reported previously because intermediate phases like the metastable Pt2Mo phase often intervene.  The unique defect structure of the sputter deposited films makes this possible!
